She has manifested behavior issues forever, but because she is very intelligent and her condition is mild, most adults just wrote her behavior off to laziness, willfulness, or bad parenting (one teacher accused me of being either "too nice" or not strict enough because she continued to have tantrums into elementary school). Recent circumstances threw her into a clinical depression and during her medication evaluation for the depression we also were able to uncover the underlying AS. I wish we had fully understood this syndrome sooner -- it explains a lot. It appears that most of the interactions on this blog involve younger children, but if anyone has information relevant to teenagers, high school and college application, I would much appreciate it. He’s perfectly delightful when he’s having his way and playing with his little brother and doing things that kids do. But, as all AS parents either know or find out, the slightest snag in his day brings the universe into a black hole from which there is often not an easy escape. " This speaks to me volumes. This is exactly, carbon copy of what I am going through. My oldest, 5 year old, son was diagnosed with AS and I have a younger son who is 3. I go through this everyday. Reading your blog gives me hope and makes me feel less alone. I love the idea of a prize vault and I think my kids would respond well to that(4 of them including the AS son, my 2nd of the 4). When my son was your child's age, it was a hard time. In some ways, they get better, actually. Of course, I'm about to see all of our efforts go down the toilet as preteen adolescense hits. The "attitude" is the worst. However, there's so much that is special about my AS children that every day I wonder what gift they'll give to the world. Your son is a gift.
